Indoor Pollution Control with Plants |
New buildings and homes, are becoming more energy efficient and tighter. Homes are using more convenient high tech materials for installations. To install they roll out, snap together, glue down and spread out materials, such as: roofing, moisture barriers, siding, insulation, carpets, flooring, drapes, wall panels, ceiling tiles, moldings, paints and other finishes. Furniture is manufactured from large composite panels made from woodfibers and plies held together with plastic glues and resins. Other furnishings are made from plastic sheeting and hardware, or injected into molds. Both the furnishings and the building finishes use vinyl- plastic skins, lacquers, sealants, and paints. All these materials have large amounts of VOCs. VOCs are Volatile Organic Compounds. VOCs are large groups of organic carbon based chemicals that easily evaporate at room temperature and are emitted as gas. As new homes are tight and energy efficient, these chemicals have no place to exit and because they are trapped inside your home, they arefreely inhaled. We know what these chemicalsare unsafe at 100 million particles. What is not being factoredis when using hundreds of products you, your family is getting an overdose of toxins or many times the safe levels from one item. These toxins consist primarily of formaldehyde, trichloroethylene, xylene, benzene, ammonia and carbon monoxide. Formaldehyde is in carpets, upholstery, glue, paints, plywood, composite wood products, lacquers, varnishes, foam insulation and gasoline. Trichloroethylene is primary gas leaked from dry cleaning articles and clothes. Benzene is in plastics, synthetic fibers, lubricants, rubber, pesticides, and vinyl. Ammonia comes primarily from cleaning products. How can one over come the built up gases. The simplest way is to vent your home.Open the windows and doors. Fresh air can circulate and exhaust the built up gases when there are temperate days. What happens on cold and hot days? Plants are next solution. In many ways they are the best solution, for they provide a means to filter the air. There many plants that can filter the bad gases and toxins out of the air and provide fragrant clean oxygen a bi-product. Think of Peter, Paul and Mary’s song Lemon Tree for plant fragrance inspiration. Plants are natural air purifiers and a great home decor. A study from NASA and the Associated Landscape Contractors of America found that plants suck in toxic chemicals through their leaves, and the roots and soil bacteria remove trace levels of toxic vapors. Studies show that a 2,000 square foot house that has twenty plants with six inchdiameter or larger pots of thetypes shown below havecleaner safer air. The bestmeans of growingisinlarger groupings invessels similar to the RollingPlanter. Listed below are the plants. RollingPlanter recycles toilet paper, paper towel and other tubes. Grows plants starts in all sort of "Rolls." |
Did you know billions of toilet paper tubes end up into landfills each year. This item is just used to attach paper and then slid on a bathroom wall dispenser accounts for millions of pounds of waste each year. Everyone has to use it and we use lots of it. Paper towels, though not everyone has to use them, also account for millions of tubes heading for landfills. Many of us have a daily habit to visit our favorite coffee shop daily. Again millions of pounds of coffee cups head to dump each year after being used for a quick ½ hour coffee break. Coffee cups are just another tube or another “roll” of cardboard. Why not do something with them. RollingPlanter is working with a coffee shops and social groups in Ventura, CA to start a campaign to reuse “Rolls” for planting apparatuses. Toilet paper rolls and paper towel rolls make great starting containers for flowers, herbs, and vegetables. Currently, our aim is to start growing seeds for winter crops and plants needed for butterfly restoration. We plan to give away or sell these plants an nominal prices to encourage conservation and promote year round gardening. As spring arrives we will provide other vegetable and plants. Ask us about our campaign: “Recycled Rolls.” |
Self-Watering System From RollingPlanter.com |
RollingPlanter.com has been working on self watering systems for over a year. We developed 6 models, until we asked ourselves why are we building a separate vessel / compartment when are planters are fully waterproof to start off. We learned a lot about wicking and marine bulkhead fittings. All our fittings in our boxes are bulkhead fittings designed for the marine industry. Instead, we decided to use our tri-ply moulten welded polyethylene pond liner that lines our planter boxes as the reservoir. For holding the dirt we use either conventional woven polypropylene shopping bags that are sold for a buck a piece or we will sell you the heavy polypropylene grow bags. These bags are filled with dirt and set on our multiple hollow cavity supports. The supports allow the bags to dip into the reservoir and with the right potting soil, (we have a recipe) one has a tidy self watering system. The bags we obtained fit our boxes and can offer a grow area for larger plants and provide less divisions. It is nice to have more divisions than less, so plants can be harvested, exchanged or removed easier. Without bags the system will have wholesale prices starting at $35 for our CAFÉ sized planters and 100. for our largest sized 4 x 7.5’ planters. It’s really an inexpensive deal when you think, but it’s the benefit of using good materials from the start. We also are offering a Hydroponic solution. This will be a bit more in cost. Here we provide raft with cut out sections for rooting baskets to hang in the planters reservoir. One can fill to full or not so full water capacity. The cost of the raft will start about $70 for small café planter and up to $250 on the largest planter. Again when you work with good materials you can do almost anything. We want our planters to last. We put both our heart and our heads into them. Why are we developing these planters. We want to enable our planters to be used both inside and outside. Inside plants are subject to indoor insects and mold. Outside plants are subject to the cold. If your plants can be rolled out when its warm and rolled back in when its cold. Your plants will be able to grow much better and avoid the earlier problems. We also developed these planters for those who know they will kill their plants or those who don’t intensionally want to kill their plants. Many people are on the go and they forget or they overlook the need to take care of their plants during their busy week schedules or when they are away on business. Friends can and can’t be trusted to take of them. We want to make life easier for both you and your plants. Come home to life. Last we want to prove to you our planters are built to last. Buy a planter from other firms that make so called “rolling planters” and see how many times they will be able to make it over the outer door threshold before literally breaking apart, they might not make one crossing. Ours, well they will just cross that little river everyday if they have to. People call in German ingenuity, it’s in my, our as a company speaks, blood to make thing last. My forefathers did it this way, why should my company change its way just to keep up with junk.
